Sagada: A Reflective Journey

Introduction

Sagada, located in the Mountain Province of the Cordillera Administrative Region,  for its cool climate and unique cultural practices. Sagada offers travelers an opportunity to disconnect from the noise of urban life and reconnect with nature and heritage.

Our visit to this mountain municipality allowed us to experience firsthand the peace, simplicity, and natural beauty that the place is known for.

Our Journey

The trip to Sagada involved several hours of land travel, using our sedan type car and my husband as the driver passing through winding mountain roads and panoramic views of pine forests and rice terraces. Although the journey was long, it served as a gradual transition from a busy environment to a calmer one. The cool air, and scenic landscapes signaled the beginning of a refreshing travel experience.

Upon arriving in Sagada, We immediately noticed the peaceful atmosphere of the town. The community was small and quiet, with wooden lodges and local cafés.

Cultural Encounter: Echo Valley and the Hanging Coffins

Accompanied by a local guide, We learned about the traditional burial practice of the Igorot people, who believed that placing coffins on cliff sides brought the deceased closer to ancestral spirits. Observing these hanging coffins was both humbling and educational, offering insight into indigenous history and beliefs.

 The Pottery-Making Experience

Sagada Pottery is a humble studio founded by master potters Lena and Siegrid. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by shelves of earth-colored sculptures, mugs, and vases.

One of the highlights of visiting Sagada Pottery is the chance to try the pottery wheel yourself. I sat down, placed my hands on the cool, damp clay, and slowly worked with the wheel as the potter guided me. It wasn’t as easy as it looked—but that was the charm of it.

 Journey to Sagada’s Blue Mountain

Locals often call it Blue Soil Hills, There’s something grounding about this trail—no noise, no crowds, just you, the mountains, and the rhythm of your own breath.

A Night at Sagada Cellar Door: Craft Beer and Mountain Magic

After a long day of exploring Sagada We decided to end the night somewhere quiet so just before sunset, We followed the uphill road past Sagada Pottery,The walk only took around 10 minutes we almost missed the entrance because it blends so beautifully with the forest.

The moment we stepped in, the smell of wood and brewing grains wrapped around us. Soft music played inside the bar while laughter drifted from the outdoor fire pit.At the counter, We are greeted with a lineup of Cerveza Sagada craft beers.

We took our drinks outside, where a small bonfire crackled in the center of the clearing. Travelers from different parts of the Philippines sat around the fire, some wrapped in jackets and scarves, others roasting marshmallows with new found friends.

It was the kind of night where you start as strangers but end up sharing stories without even realizing it. Maybe it was the beer, or the cold air, or the magic of Sagada—but everyone felt connected, like we were all meant to be there at the same time.

Culinary Experience

Sagada’s food scene reflects its simple and nature-inspired lifestyle. Many cafés offer freshly brewed Sagada coffee, homemade bread, vegetable-based meals, and well-known specialties such as lemon pie and yogurt. After long treks, these meals provided warmth and comfort that contributed to the overall travel experience.

Foggy Mornings and Sagada Coffee

I woke up early, stepped onto the balcony, and watched the fog roll across the mountains. A warm cup of Sagada coffee made the quiet morning even more magical.

Heading Home, Heart Full

As We left, the mountains slowly disappeared behind clouds, but the calmness I found remained. Sagada isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling.

Conclusion

Our trip to Sagada was more than just a vacation—it was a meaningful journey that combined cultural learning, natural exploration, and personal reflection. The destination’s unique attractions, respectful culture, and tranquil environment make it an ideal place for travelers seeking both adventure and peace. Sagada stands as a reminder of the importance of preserving natural landscapes, valuing indigenous traditions, and appreciating the beauty found in simplicity.
Travelling to different places helps me to become a better person, by broadening my perspective and teaching me adaptability. I learn to appreciate diversity and become more open-minded. Travel also pushes me out of my comfort zone, navigating unfamiliar places teaches independence, problem-solving, and resilience. And most importantly, it reminds me how connected we all are, despite our differences.
